The paint stays open at the edges and the tone shifts as the eye travels along each band. Sam Gilliam often works with acrylic on canvas in a postwar abstract painting practice.

The fine art frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. Choose white for a soft line against the washed marks, or dark wood for a firmer line that holds the band shapes together.

On a hallway wall at the end of the corridor the broad bands read as one moving shape from the corner. Step closer and the uneven edges of the wash show the hand of the artist.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0791/0162/4571/files/a811cdf3-e826-4036-bcec-2ccfe501d64c.jpg?v=1792673922
