Robert Rauschenberg was an American artist whose Combines - hybrid assemblages of paint, newspaper, photographs, and everyday objects - helped bridge Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art while radically expanding the definition of painting. His irreverent, anything-goes practice was one of the most liberating forces in post-war American art.
