A field of black, dense and matte, presses against the edges. Black Fire I is the name Newman gave it.
Two slender bands of pale fire—off-white, almost grey—slice the darkness vertically. They don’t meet the top or bottom; they simply exist, parallel, like the last light before dawn. The black absorbs everything, yet the bands refuse to disappear.
Hang it where the evening light lingers, above a low credenza or between two windows. It will hold the room without asking for attention.
