A pale stripe splits a field of deep red, interrupted by thin lines. This is Barnett Newman's Dionysius, a study in contrast and stillness.
The red is flat, unmodulated, almost physical in its presence. The pale stripe is not quite white, not quite gray, and the thin lines are neither quite parallel nor quite regular. They exist in tension with the field they divide.
