About this work
Benedetta Cappa painted Totale - 1930 Italy during her years in the Italian Futurist movement. The work shows a group of overlapping forms set on a plain ground. You see shapes pushed together with a clear sense of direction from one side to the other.
The fine art version uses a matte paper so the tones stay soft and the surface does not shine under a lamp. A light frame suits a dark wall, and a dark frame suits a pale one.
A dining room wall gets soft light from a ceiling fitting. You see the grouped forms first, then the plain background behind them. The wood frame beside a wooden table keeps the picture easy to read from the doorway.
