About this work
Untitled - Faces in a Grid Red - 1971 shows a row of repeated faces set against a red ground. Each face sits inside its own square, with simple outlines and flat tone.
This fine art print is ready to hang on arrival. From the far end of a hall you read the grid as a single red block. Up near the print the lines around each face become clear and you see the small shifts between them.
The white frame gives the picture a clean outer edge and keeps the red field from fading into the paint. It suits the blank stretch of wall beside the kitchen sink where the light changes through the day. You notice the grid pattern first, then the plain faces as you pass by.
