About this work
The title Chalice - 1941 points to a vessel shape built from thin lines. Morris Graves often worked with watercolour and ink on paper, letting pale washes sit beside darker pen strokes. You can see that mixed method in the way the edges blur and sharpen across the sheet.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel, so the image has a solid backing and a clean edge when you hang it. The matte surface keeps the grey tones from shining under a lamp.
It reads well in a narrow hallway where the light comes from one side. You notice the vessel outline first, then the faint washes that fade toward the corners.
