About this work
Metaesquema from 1957 by Helio Oiticica shows hard edged colour shapes set against a plain ground. The reds and yellows sit against a soft blue area, and the shapes feel placed rather than painted in a single stroke. The work belongs to the neo concrete movement and uses flat colour to hold a steady space on the sheet.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. A black frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. The dark border keeps the red shapes separate from the room around it, so the flat colour reads as a set of marks instead of a spill of paint.
It fits well on a narrow wall beside a front door. From the hall you see the red shapes first, and the blue ground only when you step closer to the door.
