About this work
Paysage - 1952 by Nicolas de Stael sets broad patches of colour across the sheet. Cool blue tones sit against warmer earth notes, and the painted blocks hold their own space. The picture reads as a quiet field scene built from flat colour.
The fine art print sits inside a frame with a back panel, so the image stays flat against the wall. The matte finish keeps the cool tones from shining under a lamp and lets the painted blocks read as solid shapes.
In a study above a desk, the blue patches draw the eye first, then the warmer marks take over. From the doorway you notice the broad colour areas, and closer in you pick out the small shifts between one block and the next.
