About this work
Ancient Writing - 1968 retains a calm surface with repeating marks that read like old script. The lines sit close together and run across the sheet without a clear beginning. Hiroyuki Tajima handled drawing as a slow notation rather than a picture. The marks seem to keep moving in one direction.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. The matte paper keeps the grey tones even so the repeated strokes stay flat under a lamp.
On a narrow hallway wall above a shoe shelf, the long marks lead the eye along the passage. From the kitchen door you see the whole line of writing, and from the landing you notice the small gaps between each stroke.
