About this work
The title Brown Wall - 1971 points to a painted surface of earth tones in the work of Hiroyuki Tajima. Plain colour fields sit over the sheet with little variation in tone. The picture reads as a quiet study of a wall rather than a scene.
The paper has a matte finish, so the brown tones stay flat and do not catch a lamp. A metal hanger is fitted to the back and goes straight onto a nail or screw. You can put it up as a fine art print without buying a frame.
It works in a hallway with a single bulb overhead. The dark brown field absorbs the light and makes the narrow passage feel calmer. You notice the edge of the paper against the plaster when you pass by.
