A gentle stream winds through the forest in Ivan Shishkin's 1883 painting, Stream. The water's path is quiet, almost hidden, but it guides the eye through the dense woodland.
The forest floor is a tapestry of greens and browns, with fallen leaves and moss covering the ground. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the undergrowth. The trees, tall and slender, reach upward, their trunks a mix of muted grays and greens.
