About this work
Mirror - 2002 by Jennifer Bartlett uses a grid of small painted squares to build a larger pattern. The squares repeat across the sheet in a steady arrangement. Each square holds one flat colour, and the colours change step by step through the grid.
A fine art print keeps the small squares sharp on matte paper. The surface does not shine, so the step changes between colours stay soft. A light frame can sit on a dark wall, or a wood frame can match wooden furniture nearby.
It fits a kitchen wall above a simple counter. From the doorway you notice the steady squares first, and up close you see the flat edges of each one. The colours step across the wall without a busy pattern.
