The Bush

The Bush - 1955 opens on a patch of rough paint where thick colours press against a dry ground. The eye starts at the dense dark shape near the left and drifts toward the lighter side of the sheet.

Empty space sits on the right, so the painted mass feels solid against it. John Ferren built this kind of field with broad gestures and uneven edges, and the work reads as a post war abstract painting.

The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. You can set this fine art piece on a plaster wall above a desk in a study, where the rough paint catches the low lamp glow and the lighter side stays soft.
