About this work
Albuquerque #9 by Richard Diebenkorn shows flat colour fields divided by pale lines and blocks on a quiet ground. The painted surface belongs to abstract expressionist practice, where broad colour and simple geometry sit together on the sheet.
The fine art version uses a white frame that sets a clean line around the painted bands. That white edge keeps the painted colour fields separate from the surrounding wall and gives the sheet a clear finish.
On a narrow hallway wall you see the flat planes from the landing and the pale dividing lines catch the low light. The white frame keeps the colour fields from spreading into the plaster.
