About this work
Three broad bands of red, white and brown stack across the sheet in No. 16 Red, White, and Brown - 1957. The eye rests on the pale band near the middle, then drifts to the darker tones at the top and bottom.
The spaces between the bands leave room around them. Mark Rothko built these fields with thin layers of paint, letting the colours change tone across the surface. A fine art print shows the drawing in a matte finish that keeps the colour shifts steady.
A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale band stand out without glare. The frame finish can follow the room, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
