About this work
Untitled - 1962 by Thomas Downing sets a soft band of tone against a pale ground. A measured stroke runs across the sheet and leaves a quiet edge where the colour thins. The tone shifts slowly from one side to the other.
A light frame on a dark wall keeps the pale ground clear. The frame finish can follow the room, so a wood frame beside wooden furniture settles in without drawing attention away from the band of tone.
On a hallway wall near a coat hook, the band of tone reads first, then the soft edge shows when you pass it. Thomas Downing worked in colour field painting, and this fine art print keeps that measured colour field feel.
