About this work
Agrigente - 1953 sets a warm red band against a cool grey ground. The red runs full width and the grey sits quiet under it. You can see the painted edge where the two colours meet. Nicolas de Stael paints in this way, with flat colour and clear divisions.
The fine art print uses matte paper, so the red stays even and the grey does not shine under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
In a hallway, the red band reads first from the landing, then the grey ground comes clear as you pass. The eye follows the painted edge down the wall. The print holds its tone there, with steady light on the paper.
