About this work
The title Marseille under snow - 1954 points to a painted view of a cold town along the coast. Painted forms of buildings and water sit under a grey sky. The artist Nicolas de Stael worked with broad painted strokes and colour blocks in post war European abstraction.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame is needed. The surface takes the painted colour blocks and the colder tones without adding shine under a lamp.
In a bedroom hallway with a single bulb overhead the grey sky and the darker harbour shapes stay calm at the end of the day. From the stairs you read the broad colour blocks first, then the small shifts in tone as you pass the landing.
