About this work
Chemin d hiver shows a winter path through a cold field. The painting uses thick colour laid in small patches and dabs. Jean-Paul Riopelle worked in this way for many years, building a surface from many separate points of paint. The cold blues and greys sit against a darker ground, so the path seems to cut through the snow.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The paper holds the separate colour patches without flattening them. The frame covers the edges, so the image reads as a clean field when it is on the wall.
A hall passage works well for this print. From the far end you see the dark ground first, then the lighter path leading the eye inward. Close up you notice the small separate marks that make the snow.
