Untitled - 1991 shows a black field worked over with many small strokes. The marks gather in patches and leave some paper showing through. Pierre Soulages built this kind of painting with layers of black that shift when you move past them.

A fine art print keeps the black areas even and the lighter passages readable. The frame finish you choose changes how the edge sits against the image.

It settles well on the far wall of a narrow bedroom, where the late light hits the black areas and the strokes show their separate layers. From the bed you notice the patchy build up of the paint, and the frame keeps the whole sheet steady on the wall.
