Dark Light 1940

The title Dark Light 1940 points to two tones set close together. Roberto Matta works in a surrealist painting practice where colours meet without blending. A cool band runs beside a warm patch, and the edge between them stays sharp. You can see where one tone ends and the next begins.

This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the two tones from shining under a lamp. The frame holds the edges flat and the back panel keeps the paper steady.

On a hallway wall near the coat hooks, the two tones read as one long shape. From the far end of the hall you notice the hard line between them. The colour does not spread, it stays put.
