About this work
Old Flame - 1974 opens on a wide painted band that moves across the sheet in a soft sweep. The work follows the abstract practice of Ron Gorchov, who built large colour fields with felt and paint on shaped panels. You see a quiet stretch of tone rather than sharp edges or busy detail.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The print sits on matte paper, so the paint tones stay soft and there is no shine under a lamp.
It works on a stairwell wall where the steps turn under it. From the landing you read the broad painted band first, and from the bottom step you notice the small shifts in tone. The panel shape carries the eye along the run of the stairs.
