About this work
Nature morte au verre - 1954 sets a glass vessel on a plain surface against a flat ground. The eye finds the bowl first, then rests on the empty space beside it. Nicolas de Stael painted in broad blocks and kept the outline plain.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte paper holds the cooler zones without shine, so the painted shapes stay separate from the ground.
On a kitchen wall near the sink, the bowl reads first, then the grey ground pushes back. From the table you see the plain edge of the frame, and the still life stays quiet behind the dish rack.
