Desert Pass by Helen Frankenthaler (1976)

Two ridges of burnt sienna press against a sky of diluted indigo. Desert Pass, 1976, holds the heat between them without a single line of horizon. Frankenthaler poured thinned acrylic straight onto unprimed canvas, letting the pigments bleed into soft-edged veils. A streak of ochre drifts left like windblown sand; a blush of rose lingers at the base, almost imperceptible. The colors don’t compete—they settle into stillness. Hang it above a low credenza where the quiet palette can breathe, or opposite a south-facing window so the afternoon light warms the sienna to life.
