Un doux ruisseau serpente à travers la forêt dans le tableau de 1883 d'Ivan Chichkine, intitulé Le Ruisseau. Le cours d'eau est discret, presque caché, mais il guide le regard à travers le bois dense.
Le sol de la forêt est une tapisserie de verts et de bruns, avec des feuilles mortes et de la mousse recouvrant le sol. La lumière du soleil filtre à travers la canopée, projetant des ombres mouchetées sur le sous-bois. Les arbres, grands et élancés, s'élèvent, leurs troncs mêlant des gris et des verts sourds.
