Untitled by Robert Goodnough (1996)

A grid of white rectangles floats over a gray ground. Goodnough’s 1996 Untitled keeps the edges raw, as if the canvas was cut from a larger roll. Thin black lines stitch the rectangles together, some tilted, others perfectly vertical. The gray beneath isn’t flat; it holds faint horizontal striations, like brushstrokes that refused to blend. A single ochre rectangle peeks from the bottom right, a quiet counterpoint to the dominant white. Hang it where morning light can slide across the surface, a hallway or above a low credenza.
