A fractured ring of stone floats on water. This is Robert Smithson's Broken Circle, a study in contrasts. The unyielding rocks interrupt the fluid surface, creating a tension between the natural and the constructed.
The circle, incomplete and jagged, draws the eye. It rests on a body of water, its reflection distorted by ripples. The surrounding land is barren, devoid of vegetation, emphasizing the starkness of the scene. The colors are muted, dominated by the grays of the stone and the muted blues of the water.
