Compression To Purple by Max Bill (1965)

A purple rectangle presses against a white ground. The edges are crisp, the hue unbroken. This is Compression To Purple, Max Bill’s 1965 exercise in spatial tension. Inside the rectangle, two narrow bands of white cut parallel to the long sides, leaving a slender violet core. The bands don’t touch the edges; they hover, creating a quiet corridor of color. No gradients, no brushstrokes—just geometry and light. Hang it above a low credenza or between two windows. The purple will read as a solid plane by day, a luminous void by night.
