An ice box keeps things cool, but this painting by Gene Davis does the opposite. Ice Box (p506) crackles with quiet heat.
Fifty-one vertical stripes, each no wider than a pencil, stand shoulder to shoulder. Cadmium red, cerulean, and a single band of lemon yellow refuse to blend. The edges stay crisp, as if cut with a ruler.
Hang it above a mid-century credenza; the stripes will echo the grain of walnut without competing with it.
