Mandala by Adolph Gottlieb (1971)

A radiant black circle floats inside a square of ochre. This is Gottlieb’s Mandala from 1971, a quiet explosion of geometry and hue. The ochre field is brushed in uneven strokes, warmer at the top, cooler toward the bottom. A thin white halo separates the black disc from the square, creating a shimmering edge. No hard lines here—just pressure and breath on canvas. Hang it above a low credenza; the ochre will pull the room’s wood tones into the conversation.
