Five stacked rectangles, each a shade darker than the last. This is Number 6, Ad Reinhardt’s 1946 exercise in chromatic restraint. The topmost block is a pale, almost chalky blue, while the bottom dissolves into a muted charcoal. Between them, three transitional bands—cool gray, slate, and deep navy—create a gradient so gradual it feels like watching dusk settle. No brushstrokes betray the hand; the surface reads as seamless, as if the colors emerged from within the canvas itself. Hang it where the afternoon light lingers, above a low credenza or beside a reading chair. The quiet shift from light to dark will pull the eye without demanding it stay.
