About this work

Solar Diary (Needle Park) by Gene Davis (1972)

Narrow ribbons of lemon, tangerine, and slate blue run edge to edge. This is Solar Diary (Needle Park), Gene Davis’s 1972 painting. Thirty-one vertical stripes, each no wider than a pencil, stack in precise sequence. The left half glows with citrus hues, while the right cools into indigo and charcoal, creating a quiet divide down the center. No brushstrokes show; the color feels poured, not applied. Hang it above a low credenza in a sunlit dining room, where the stripes catch the afternoon light like a prism.
