Louise Bourgeois was a French-American sculptor whose monumental spider sculptures, fabric cells, and psychologically charged installations drew on childhood trauma, sexuality, and the mother-child relationship to create some of the most powerful and personally revealing art of the 20th century. Her decade-spanning career shaped feminist art and contemporary sculpture.
