Maruja Mallo was a Spanish Surrealist painter and one of the most original female voices of the Spanish avant-garde, known for her vibrant, allegorical works depicting peasants, market scenes, and cosmic architectures that combine political commitment with hallucinatory imagery. Her colourful, visionary art defied easy categorisation.
