About this work
Abstract Composition - 1954 by Serge Poliakoff shows layered shapes and colour fields that overlap and fold into each other. The work belongs to the post war abstract painting period, when artists built form through tone and edge rather than a clear subject.
A fine art print shows the painted bands and tone shifts in a matte finish, so the darker passages stay deep and the lighter ones stay soft. The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
It fits a study wall where the desk lamp gives a low warm light and the shapes read from the chair. The eye moves from one band to the next without stopping at a single mark.
