About this work
White shapes and black lines sit on a pale ground in Abstract in White Black Indian and Lilac 1957. The marks look like loose brush strokes and soft colour patches laid down by hand. Victor Pasmore worked with abstract forms and open grounds in his later practice.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The paper is matte, so the lilac stays even and the black strokes do not flash under a lamp. The framed print sits at eye height on a wall where the light comes from one side.
On a landing between two doors the big pale field reads first, then the small lilac marks come into view. The frame follows the narrow wood trim on the stairs. You notice the way the black lines carry across the white ground as you pass.
