About this work
Abstract Painting 599 1986 by Gerhard Richter shows a pane of smeared colour with soft edges and no sharp outline. The surface moves like wet paint dragged across glass, and the grey and red tones blend without a clear line. From the doorway the broad bands read as one flat field.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. It looks best on a narrow hall wall where the light does not hit the glass directly. As you walk past, the soft grey and red bands shift as the angle changes.
A hallway wall works well for this print. From the mat at the end of the corridor you see the soft grey and red tones hold together, and the frame edge keeps the blurred paint from spilling off the paper.
