About this work
Architecture of the Plain 1923 by Paul Klee shows a flat field broken into small squares and lines. The colours sit in neat blocks, with a few darker bands running across the surface. From across the room the grid reads as a steady pattern.
The print is made with a fine art process, so the painted blocks hold their flat tone without a sheen. A light frame on the same wall lets the pale bands stay clear, while a darker frame keeps the edge calm.
It hangs on the landing wall between two doors, where the square fields match the plaster lines on the ceiling. You notice the painted grid first, then the small lines near the bottom of the print.
