About this work
The landscape in At the Foot of the Mountains moves from a green hill slope down toward a flat band of ground. Short strokes of green and brown push across the picture, with a thin line of pale sky at the top. Vincent van Gogh builds the slope with quick, repeated marks that follow the shape of the land.
The fine art print keeps the brush directions clear on a matte sheet, so the darker greens stay separate from the lighter bands. A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale sky band stay soft, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture ties the brown tones together.
On a narrow hallway wall, the viewer sees the hill slope first and the repeated strokes second, with the pale sky above the doorway.
