About this work
Berkeley #59 by Richard Diebenkorn shows a painted field with blocks of colour and drawn lines set on top. The shapes stay open and the marks read as separate steps on the surface. The work belongs to the Berkeley series, where Diebenkorn balanced painted colour with graphite lines and changes of ground.
This fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel behind the sheet. The print keeps the painted rectangles and the pencil lines in place, and the back panel covers the rear cleanly. It arrives assembled when the ready to hang option is used.
On a kitchen wall near the breakfast counter, the broad painted shapes read first from the table. The thin drawn lines show when you stand by the sink. The door behind the chair frames the block of colour on the wall.
