Black Field by Adolph Gottlieb (1972)

A dense rectangle of black fills the lower half. Black Field, 1972, is Gottlieb’s final word on gravity and silence. The surface isn’t flat; it’s built from overlapping strokes of matte charcoal, each edge fraying into the raw linen weave. Above, a thin band of unprimed canvas glows like a horizon line, separating the void from the pale, uneven sky of the upper register. No brushwork competes; the black simply is. Hang it where light glances off the texture—above a low credenza in a sunlit hallway or flanking a doorway in a quiet study.
