Blanc — Fine Art

Simon Hantai made blanc tachisme works by folding paper, pressing pigment into the wet fold, then pulling the paper open. The marks spread out in soft irregular shapes across the sheet. The paint sits in pools and thin washes where the paper opened. The technique leaves a textured ground with uneven colour spread.

The fine art print is made on matte paper, so the grey and white tones do not shine under light. The paper holds the folds of colour without glare. A light frame keeps the pale marks visible from the doorway.

On a narrow hallway wall the broad painted shapes guide the eye toward the stairs. At the top step you see the small pooling marks left by the folded paper. The room feels calm because the paint spreads evenly across the page.
