About this work
Blaze 1 1962 by Bridget Riley is a black and white stripe painting from the op art practice of the 1960s. The paint goes down in even bands that run across the page. The lines sit side by side with no gaps between them.
This fine art print sits on a wall where the light stays even during the day. A dark frame keeps the white paper clear against a pale wall. The print does not need direct light to read the stripes. In a bright corner the black lines stay sharp.
It works on a bedroom wall beside a window with plain curtains. From the bed the stripes move as a single band. Standing near the side of the bed you see each line as a separate mark. The eye follows the row from one side to the other.
