About this work
Blue Nude IV 1952 shows a curving figure in blue against a plain ground. The body rests in a shallow twist, with loose blue lines wrapping around the form. Henri Matisse painted these flat shapes during his late work, when he pushed colour and outline into simple forms.
The print sits on a matte fine art sheet, so the blue tones stay soft and the edges do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the pale blue clear, or a dark frame on a pale wall lets the shape stand apart.
It hangs on a bedroom wall above a low chest, set a little higher than eye level. From across the room the blue curve reads as a single shape, and closer up you notice the uneven line where the paint stops.
