About this work
Bouquet of Dahlias and White Book 1923 shows a vase of dahlia flowers set near an open book with a white cover. The paint sits in quick, separate strokes. Petals and pages share the same bright ground. Henri Matisse built the scene from bold colour areas and loose outlines.
The fine art print keeps those separate marks visible on a non shiny surface. A light frame sits on a dark wall, so the white cover and the flower colours stand apart from the wall behind them.
On a pale wall hung at eye level from a short distance, the white book cover reads first, then the flower strokes fill in around it. The room stays quiet behind the bright page.
