About this work
In By the Sea - 1957, Richard Pousette-Dart builds a surface from small strokes and dots that gather into a loose field of colour. The paint is laid in thin layers, each one pressing against the next. You can see the hand moving across the page.
The marks stay open and unblended. The picture feels made by many quick passes of the brush. The fine art board keeps the edges clean and the colour holds its tone under natural light.
Hang it on a pale wall at shoulder height. Light from a side lamp catches the small strokes and shows the little ridges in the surface. The dark frame beside a wooden chair keeps the picture steady.
