About this work
Two pale colour fields sit apart with a single vertical stripe between them. The vertical stripe cuts the space into two clear parts. This is Canto XI by Barnett Newman. The work belongs to abstract expressionism and leans toward colour field painting.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel shows the two fields and the stripe. The paper is matte, so the pale fields stay soft and the dark stripe does not shine under a lamp. The frame gives the sheet a firm edge.
On a plain hallway wall the two fields read from across the hall. The stripe catches the eye first. From the doorway the pale fields look like open sky. Close up the matte surface keeps the colours even.
