Canto XIV by Barnett Newman uses wide vertical bands to divide a single field. The lines cut down the sheet and leave a clear shape behind them.

This practice of colour fields and vertical marks is what the artist is known for. The print is a fine art piece set in a frame with a back panel. The frame gives the sheet a clean edge and the back panel keeps it flat.

You see the bands best from a short distance. A plain wall keeps the shapes clear. The vertical lines run from top to bottom on a plain ground in the print.
