About this work
Castle Garden 1931 shows a small castle set among plants and paths. Paul Klee builds the scene from thin lines and small colour patches. The marks sit close together, so the garden reads as a quiet arrangement of forms. A viewer can follow the paths from one shape to the next.
You can choose a light frame for a dark wall, or a dark frame for a pale wall. A wood frame also works beside wooden furniture. On a fine art surface the small patches stay readable and the thin lines do not blur.
In a study above a desk the scene stays calm under a desk lamp. From the chair you see the line work clearly, and from the doorway you notice the patch of green near the castle.
